Quarantine Quandiaries
[Where I imagine to be a food columnist, answering questions from helpless and panic readers, during these quarantine times]
Every other week after I buy my groceries, I come home and set aside about 90% of the fresh produce I buy, chop them, and freeze them with the vague hope that some day, when things get really bad, I will be thankful to my current self for having had the forethought for freezing them. I would love to eat some of those things now. But I can’t because I am worried about my future self who will need this more. How bad things will have to get for me to know that it’s finally time to eat my “when things get really bad” food?

Dear Michael,
A philosophical question indeed.
The short answer is Never. Sorry.
But the truth is, 36 months from now when you find yourself moving things around in your freezer to make room for a box of fudge or a few leftover slices of a birthday cake, and you accidentally stumble across an unopened bag of green beans, that’s exactly when.
I hope my family is not unique. The thing is my family looooooves bread. Like really loves bread. But all the bread in all…
