On Sharks, Electrocution, Hannibal Lecter, and such things…
“I’m going to confess: I love Venn diagrams. You know, those three — if you’re ever like in a moment of conflict, pull out a Venn diagram.” — VP Kamala Harris
The Democratic presumptive nominee and VP Kamala Harris has a well-documented passion for Venn Diagrams, and she’s not shy about it. The Vice President’s love affair with these intersecting circles goes beyond the typical fondness one might have for visual aids. She often uses them to discuss policy ideas with her team and while explaining these ideas to the public. I don’t know if she is going to pull out one during her campaign rallies. And if she did, I won’t be surprised.
For example, at speech at Bryn Mawr University in 2022, she famously pulled out a Venn diagram to illustrate the alarming overlap between states attacking women’s reproductive healthcare, voting rights, and LGBTQ+ rights. “You would not be surprised to know that there was quite an overlap,” she quipped, listing states like Florida, Georgia, Texas, Alabama, and Arizona.
Now, if you think Venn Diagrams are just for math geeks and data analysts, think again. Venn Diagram is the most powerful visual tool available out there to convey a complex point across to any audience through a few circles. Venn Diagrams, with their ability to highlight connections and contrasts, are a versatile medium that can break down difficult ideas into simpler ones and convey the gist of what you want to communicate in an engaging manner. These little circles of joy are not only a favorite of our VP but also a crucial tool for visualizing relationships and patterns. In fact, if wielded correctly, Venn Diagrams can save lives and even democracy itself!
I will confess. I am a bit of a Venn Diagram geek too but I use them mostly to convey humor.
So, I thought I would create a few Venn Diagrams. Because you know..creating these fun Venn diagrams serves as more than just a celebration of this powerful visual tool; it’s an opportunity to infuse humor and creativity into everyday topics — especially politics.
With approximately 100 more days to go for us to save democracy from weird people, these are topics, dare I say, that are very relevant to current times.
- Kamala Harris as a presidential candidate
2. Do you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?
3. What did you say? DEI Hire?
4. Some people like couches for more than one reason. But let’s not get there.
5. It will take years for psychologists to unravel the mystery behind the sudden spike in interest in Hannibal Lecter merchandise.
6. They are weird. Yeah. They are just weird!!
7. I am more of a dog person. But still..
8. Like I said, they are weird. And this is one of the many reasons why they are weird.
9. They are WEIRD. Exhibit #9019191019.
10. It says a lot about you when you choose to vote for a pedophile, rapist, racist, convicted felon, and a criminal thug, because you want him to be your president AGAIN.
That was fun.
I just want to conclude by stating once again that the above exploration of ideas through Venn Diagrams showcases their unique ability to blend humor with insight. By juxtaposing unexpected elements and themes, all I tried to do was to celebrate these diagrams’ capacity to spark joy by highlighting topics that may resonate with you and maybe even with VP Kamala Harris herself.
Don’t you love Venn Diagrams?
I rest my case.
